Six Sigma Management has been one of the most popular methodologies of quality management recently, since the GE and Motorola were booming within the operation of it in the decade of the 1990s. It includes two typical improvement systems, DMAIC and DFSS (Design for Six Sigma). The former is usually used for exsiting process improvement while the latter is used in new product development.DFSS marries the notion of doing things right the first time with the belief in the importance of leadership in making things better.DFSS encompasses many tools and best practices that can be selectively deployed during the phases of a product development process. Specifically, DFSS integrates three major tactical elements to help attain the ubiquitous business goals of low cost, high quality, and rapid cycle-time from product development: A clear and flexible product development process; A balanced portfolio of tools and best practices; Disciplinced use of project managemet methods.C Corporation, a famous US multinational manufacturing enterprise, achieved a significant success by launching a new product development proces-Passport based on DFSS in 1990s. So, when the new China R&D center opened in 2005, one of the most important things was to strictly follow the Passport process. This thesis in detail describes, analyzes and studies the practice process of Passport .application in China. The stucture is aligned with the three tactical elements of DFSS. First, the Passort process itself and its key characteristics is brifely introduced as the background. Second, through real case study, we illustrate how to design and control program cylce time to attain the objective by disciplinced using proper project mangement methods. Third, as the example of rigorous application of six sigma tools, DOE (Design of Experiments) is elaborated step by step to demonstrate how to design and achieve targeted high quality level. Finally, experiences and lessons are summarized for the total practice process and can be taken as a useful reference on similar DFSS application cases.
