With the continuous development of the market economy, China's construction enterprises face with unprecedented multivariate competition, and the first to be affected is the competition of talents. Construction project manager which is compound talents with the knowledge of technical, economic, legal and management have became guarantee of making construction companies in an unassailable position. But on the staff selection, recruitment, training, performance management and career planning of construction project manager, most of the domestic construction enterprises lack advanced management concepts. And management methods are relatively backward. A serious shortage of this philosophy, approach and methods can not meet the new period of construction enterprise development requirements. Study of the competence is one of the hot spots in the field of contemporary psychology, human resources management, Pedagogy, and other academic research. Competency model can help enterprises better realize the job analysis, selection and recruitment, training, performance management, career planning and other functions. At present, there are only a few researches on competence model of construction project manager at home and abroad. Therefore, it is necessary to make preliminary efforts on research of the construction project manager's competence model.This study first combs the relevant research results of competence at home and abroad, and points out current problems. On this basis, operate job analysis of construction project manager to clear the powers and responsibilities of the construction project manager. It carries out in-depth interviews, using key events coding method to obtain competence factors and title of the questionnaire of construction project manager. And from the three dimensions of knowledge and skills, attitudes and values, leading characteristics, it classifies competency factors and proposes model of construction project manager and hypothesis of this article assumed. Combining idea of theoretical models and the interviews results, it compiles questionnaire of construction project manager's competency model.And then, it carries out validity and reliability test by small-scale survey questionnaire. Test results show that the questionnaire has good reliability and validity. On this basis, it launches a large-scale survey, and using SPSS13.0 on sample data analysis, it gets construction project manager's competency factors of dimensions of knowledge and skills, which contain targeted management capability, basic knowledge and quality, communication and coordination capability, conflict management capability; competency factors of dimensions of attitude and values, which contain sense of career, responsibility and integrity, sense of competition and interpersonal competence; competency factors of dimensions of leadership trait, which contain judgment decision-making power, influence, emotion management, team-building and strategic management. In view of the different personal characteristics of different construction project managers, there might exist certain differences in their competency. In order to better understand differences of competency of construction project manager with different personal characteristics, it carries out difference analysis on construction project manager's competency using one-way ANOVA.Finally, empirical study of relationship between construction project manager's competency and performance is carried out. Research shows that competency model of construction project manager can effectively distinguish between high-performance and general performance group of construction project manager. And there exists a positive correlation between construction project manager's competence and performance. Also, influence degree of different competencies on performance is different, in which dimension of knowledge and skills with a significant impact on the task performance, dimension of attitudes and values with a significant impact on contextual performance, dimension of leadership trait with a significant impact on task performance and contextual performance.
