| Along with the rapid development of megacities, the gap between cities and suburbs is further enlarged."City-Rural Dualistic Structure"is not only a social phenomenon but also a shackle hindering the further development of cities. The spatial pattern of center city and suburbs in big cities and the demand for developing advanced manufacturing and modern service industry require adjusting spatial pattern of cities to create a new city form by promoting the construction of small towns in suburbs in order to meet the need for the rapid development of megacities. Shanghai, as one of the most developing center cities in China and a core city in global competition, can further improve its comprehensive strength by enlarging the construction of suburbs. Along with the trend for promoting the construction of new countryside all over the country, Shanghai should promote the healthy and rapid development of small towns in suburbs by combining with its own regional characteristics. The present thesis is organized by methods of literature-reviewing, case-interviewing, field-surveying, SPSS statistical-analyzing and geographical information system-analyzing.First, it generalizes the status quo of small towns at home and abroad, analyzes the focus of present research on small towns at home and abroad, summarizes characteristics and motive factors of the development of small towns in suburbs of megacities, and works up relevant construction theory on small towns by collecting and reviewing literatures. Then, it analyses the whole spatial features of new towns in Shanghai by geographic information system. Shanghai new towns, which belong to the third degree of Shanghai town system, play an essential role in promoting urban-rural integration in Shanghai and improving the comprehensive development of Shanghai. Based on the above-mentioned research, the present paper evaluates and analyzes the development of Shanghai new towns by applying the principal component analysis in SPSS mathematical statistics. The present thesis is a special case study, and it is analyzed by the scores of principal component factor. At last, after discussing, five basic developing models at home and abroad are concluded, that is, the assistance of center cities type, the communication and trade type, the tourism and service type, the industrial park type, and the center zones type. And the existing problems of new town development are concluded. Several suggestions are put forward on the development of new towns in Shanghai suburbs: 1. enhancing support on policy 2. non-balancing development and constructing with focus. 3. improving distinctive industry 4. keeping sustainable development. |
