One important aspect of society is that of sustainable development. One of the main issues for our government is how to build a well-off and harmonious society in a holistic way. Therefore the pace at which minority regions are developing is quickening. Especially, the economic development of minority regions has begun a new epoch by the strategy of developing China's western regions.Sinkiang is a vast territory with a sparse population, minimal economy, and isn't very developed in its present state. Despite this however, it has an abundance of tourist resources. Current growth in this region is slow; however it has a high level of potential for profitable future development. The tourism industry in particular could help these regions development due to the low consumption of resources, good promoting coefficient, plenty job opportunities and sound comprehensive benefits. China is currently in a special era of economic development despite the recent financial crisis. Therefore during this present time of growth, it is ideal to take advantage of the benefits that tourism development can have for this region, ensuring growth, and boosting domestic demands and adjusting the structure.With the principle of sustainable development and sustainable territorial development theory, while considering the actual conditions in Sinkiang, this thesis expounds upon the significance the tourism industry could have in Sinkiang. It will also seek to analyze the maladies, problems and developing plans in sustainable manner for Sinkiang tourism. Furthermore, this thesis provides empirical research on sustainable development of South Sinkiang, which combines the theory of minority economics and the actual situation of South Sinkiang tourism development. Hope this thesis can provide references regarding the tourism development of minority regions in the borderland.The thesis has four parts. Firstly we will establish the significance of this topic, the theory and research of domestic and overseas tourism for sustainable development, and explain the main content framework, research methods and new ideas. The second part analyzes the current development status and existing problems of Sinkiang tourism. The third part is the main part of this thesis. We will explore the ways to sustainably develop Sinkiang tourism. This paper will go into the specifics of the current conditions in Sinkiang and analyze detailed development plans to variously implement development in this area. Lastly, empirical research on the southern regions in Sinkiang will be examined. South Sinkiang, which is rarely paid attention to, is a minority region with poor economy and tourism development. In virtue of its abundant tourist resources and especial geographical position, Sinkiang has high potential to develop multiple types of tourism, folk-custom tourism, desert tourism, inbound tourism and so on.
