In the comprehensive transportation system, highway transportation with the characteristics of rapidity, flexibleness, and door-to-door transportation can assistant passengers or cargo's collection and distribution for railway, water transportation and so on, so it plays an important role similar to the capillaries. As a underdeveloped province and coal energy-chemistry base, Shanxi Province, highway transportation has always possessed very important position in national economy. Under the guidance of theory of transportation geography, economic geography, regional economics, highway economics, the paper were finished with the scientific reason mathod such as classification, analysis, comprehensive and mathematical method such as correlation analysis, principal component analysis on the base of data collection, which can reflect development level of the highway transportation. In the course of analyzing the highway transportation's development, change, regional difference , deficiency, and it's relation with economic development level in Shanxi Province since 1949, the development level of Shanxi Province's highway transportation has been described comprehensively and objectively. In addition, the contribution of highway transportation to Shanxi province's economic development was fully realized and correctly evaluated. The conclusion can provide decision-making reference and theoretical support for planning-making, investment and project establishment of highway construction so as to promote the development level of Shanxi Province's highway transportationThe main research contents are as follows:First part of the study focused on researching development course of Shanxi Province's highway transportation. According to traffic mileage and annual growth rate of highway, it was divided into five stages since 1949. Then the analysis to structure and quantity change of automobile were finished. Temporal variation of highway passenger transportation and freight transportation in Shanxi Province was obtained.In the second part, evaluation of Shanxi Province's highway development level were finished according to highway net density, line grade and pavement quality. Based on section data, the highway development level of eleven cities are significant geographical different in Shanxi Province, as well as among the east, middle and west zone. The development types of eleven cities'highway net construction were gained and regional difference of passenger transportation and freight transportation were analyzed.In the third part, using the software SPSS and indicators such as highway net density, per capita traffic mileage, the proportion of high grade highway, which reflect comprehensive development level of highway transportation, development and change of eleven cities'highway were analyzed in 2004-2007. The conclusion were that: the comprehensive development level is high in the east and south , low in the west and north. The regions with similar development level showed concentrated distribution, while the regions with higher development level and lower development level showed interval distribution, that is, the horizontal distribution of development level from north to south is the low band, relatively high band, relatively low band and the high band .In the fourth part, positive correlation between highway net construction level and regional economic development level was obtained by building regression equation, as well as relation between development level of highway and regional economic development level.In the last part, according to research results, some advices were given to promote the development of Shanxi Province's highway transportation.
