Ulcerative colitis (known as chronic non-specific ulcerative colitis, UC) is a type of unknown etiology of chronic inflammatory disease, which pathological characteristic is colonic mucosa and the sub mucosa appear continuity of inflammation. It is a type of inflammatory bowel disease. The main clinical manifestations include the symptoms such as the abdominal pain, diarrhea, stool with the blood and pus and tenesmus.UC has a long'course and the severity of the illness is different. It is recurrent and concerns with colonic cancer. In clinical, UC is a disease which is difficult to treat and is one kind of the modern difficult treating diseases, defined by the World Health Organization'.Clinical pathway (CP):is a set of standard therapeutic model and treatment procedures, which is built to treat a disease; and it is an integrated clinical treatment model. It is based on evidence-based medicine and guidelines to guide the treatment groups and disease management method, and ultimately playing a regulatory medical practice, reducing variability and costs, improving the quality. Compare with the guidelines, its content is more concise and easy to understand, applied to the specific multi-disciplinary multi-sectoral operation. And it's a diagnosis and treatment process of a specific disease, which focusing on the treatment process interoperability between the various specialties and the results of treatment and time. The process of development in UC is clear and the changes are small. Modern medicine has developed a comprehensive, standardized, accepted treatment guideline of ulcerative colitis; it is suitable for clinical disease as a single path optimization. Traditional Chinese Medicine or integration of traditional and western medicine has a definite effect in improving symptoms and preventing recurrence and improving the quality of patient's life. However, the existing research has not received an evidence-based medicine support to get reliable conclusions; the results are not very convinced. In order to draw recognized conclusions, we need for multi-center, randomized, controlled clinical trial. In recent years, the medical treatment is difficult and expensive and it becomes an urgent social problem. The implementation of clinical pathways can not only reduce the cost of hospitalization and hospital staying, but also improve bed turnover rate and increase hospital revenues. In the current circumstances, the medical costs are excessively growing so that the medical model should be a win-win promotion. Therefore, the implementation of the TCM treatment of ulcerative colitis clinical pathway is imperative. It's fully reflected the implementation of clinical pathways evidence-based medicine's philosophy and adheres to the principle of continuous improving of quality management, it can ensure that the treatment measures are prospective, scientific, and systematic. The cost control is reasonable.Through study the cases the diagnosis of hospitalized patients with UC with active management of the clinical path in December 2009 to December 2010, in the department of Gas troent ero logy of Chinese Medicine Hospital in Beijing during of study; and January 2007 to December 2009 in our hospital non-path group of UC patients were analyzed. So, we can clearly know the advantages of UC clinical pathway and understand their actual situation in ensuring the quality of care, improving patient satisfaction, reducing the patients'costs, reducing the length of stay. Also we can evaluate the established clinical pathway UC.
