Objective: To explore the feasibility of the way that the average intensity of the X-gram of ovariotomized rats measured by computer shows the bone mass. To study the effect of several decoctions on the bone mass of ovariotomized rats. To research the different position of ovariotomized rats taken effect by different decoctions in order to seeking special formula.Methods: Eighty 3-month-old female SD rats, were randomized into eight group: Sham-OVX group; ovariotomized group (OVX); Sanxian decoction group; Zizhi decoction group; new formula group; new formula added with bone material group; Ca33 group; Nilestrioli group. The experiment lasted for three months. At the end of it, the rats were taken photograph and the pictures were scanned and processed by the computer. The average intensity of the different parts bones was measured. The BMD and BMC of the left distal femur of rats of all groups (except Ca33 group) were measured with ASP. Ultimate load (UL) and ultimate deformation (UD) of right femur of all groups were measured with electronic universal experiment apparatus.Results: The average intensity of rat' s lumbar vertebra of OVX group measured by computer was significantly lower than that of Sham-OVX group (p<0.05). The average intensity of Sanxian decoction group and Zizhi decoction group and new formula group and Ca33 group were significantly higher than that of OVX group (p<0. 01). Nilestrioli group and new formula added with bone material group showed an increasing trend compared with OVX group. The average intensity of rat' s cervical vertebra of OVX group measured by computer showed decreasing trend compared with Sham-OVX group. The average intensity of Sanxian decoction group and Zizhi decoction group and new formula group and Ca33 group were significantly higher than that of OVX group (p<0. 01). Nilestrioli group and new formula added with bone material group showed an increasing trend compared with OVX group. The average intensity of rat' s long bone of OVX group measured by computer showed decreasing trend compared with Sham-OVX group. Nilestrioli group and new formula added with bone material group showed an increasing trend compared with OVX group. The average intensity of rat' s proximal femurand femur of Sanxian decoction group and Zizhi decoction group and new formula group and Ca33 group were significantly higher than that of OVX group (p<0. 05). The average intensity of the middle of rat' s femur of Sanxian decoction group and new formula group were significantly higher than that of OVX group (p<0. 05). The average intensity of rat' s distal femur of Sanxian decoction group was significantly higher than that of OVX group (p<0. 05). The average intensity of rat' s distal humerus of Zizhi decoction group and new formula group were significantly higher than that of OVX group (p<0. 05). The BMC and BMD of rat' s left distal femur of OVX group which were measured with ASP was significantly lower than that Sham-OVX group (p<0. 01), the BMC and BMD of other groups were significantly higher than that of OVX group (p<0. 01). The UD and UL of OVX group had an decreasing trend compared with Sham-OVX group, while the UL of Sanxian decoction group and Zizhi decoction group and new formula group were significantly higher than both OVX-group and Nilestrioli group (p<0.05), the UD of Sanxian decoction group and Zizhi decoction group and new formula group and new formula added with bone material group also showed an increasing trend compared with OVX group.Conclusion: The way that the average intensity of the X-gram of ovariotomized rats measured by computer shows the bone mass is inexpensive and easy to operate. It is reliable especially for lumbar vertebra. It is a method that can be applied to our country of outlying district. Because of many influenced factors, be used in clinic, some parts of it have yet to be perfected.
