Belamcanda chinensis(L.)DC, is a medical plant from Belamcanda genus, Iridaceae. There are only one species in my country. Belamcanda chinens is (Iridaceae) is a perennial shrub, distributed on the warm hillsides, edge of the forest and meadow where have enough sunshine in East Asia including Korean, peninsula. In China, the plants distributed in the whole country everywhere, whose rhizomes have been used as Chinese traditional medicine to treat flu, cough, inflammation, asthma, pneumonia as well as throat troubles such as tonsillitis, pharyngolary-ngitis, laryngeal edema and so on. As one of the Chinese herbal medicines commonly used, Belamcanda chinensis can counteract poison to swallow, dispel phlegm and promote blood flow to decrease throat swelling.Studies on the chemical constituent of B.chinensis investigated that there were flavonoids, isoflavons, ketone, phenols, benzoquinone, steroid and some evaporabity components. The most meaningful thing is the discovery of isoflavones. The plants from Iris genus, Iridaceae, are usually used as Belamcanda chinens is, such as Iris tectorum, Iris dichotoma. There are 210 species in Iris genus all over the world, and about 60 species in our country. The studies show that isoflavones are the characteristic constituents of Iris and Belamcanda. So, isoflavones are not only important in the chemical and classification of the medicinal plant species, but also show physiologic activity of anti-inflammatory, anti-virus, anti-oxidation and clearing free radicals.Modern pharmacologic researches were intended to clarify the mechanism for the anti-inflammatory activity of the rhizomes of B. chinensis. One of the mechanisms is the inhibition of prostaglandin E₂ production by B. chinensis due to the inhibition of the induction of COX-2 in the inflammatory cells.
