Robert Schumann is a famous composer and musical commentator of Romantic Music in 19th century. His music is full of fantasy and poetry, depicting the inner activity of characters and personality and scene of people in life. The combination of music with literature and poem forms a unique romantic style. Schumann's profound knowledge of literature lays a firm foundation for his music comment. He criticized the corrupting thought in musical life at that time, searched and recommended new stars to the society through his keen eye. He played an important role in connecting the link in European music development historySchumann created quantities of music composition in his life, and piano music is an important part. He originated the piano cycle and created many masterpieces, such as The Kinderszenen(op.15), which is one of the most famous piano cycles. It compromised 13 short and concise pieces, each with a mini-story, expressing the memory and nostalgia of childhood.The Kinderszenen, the music repertoire played by the author at the concert, concentratedly reflects Schumann's creative technique and poetry style. That is the reason why it is selected as the thesis. In this thesis, Schumann's life and composition are introduced; creative features and skills of The Kinderszenen are rolled out; finally is the comparison of different performance version. The author hopes that the theoretical and practical performance understanding of The Kinderszenen plays an important role in enlightening the author's research on Schumann and his composition.
