Wu Xinghua is a unique and gifted poet, scholar and translator in the modern literary world. With his knowledge expanding to cover both the West and the East as well as ancient and modern learning, he has made brilliant achievements in the field of poetry, academic research and translation. Especially in poetry writing, his spectacular accomplishments are beyond question. Throughout his life, Mr. Wu has created more than 100 modern poems which vary from other Chinese modern poems in subject, image, form and imagination significantly. However, people who still know his name can be reckoned up on the fingers of one hand. Nor does his name appear in the works on the history of Chinese literature. By analyzing Wu Xinghua's poets and essays, the thesis aims at outlining the artistic profile of his creation discussing his value and status in Chinese modern literary world.Except the introduction and conclusion, the thesis consists of 2 chapters: The first chapter focuses on the classification and analysis of Mr. Wu's modern poems which take up a large proportion of his total works. This chapter elaborates in the following three aspects: process of creating, types of his modern poems and major artistic characteristics. Many of Mr. Wu's poems weren't published in the mainland of China, so a lot of scholars who study him concentrate in Hong Kung and Taiwan, which the first section rounds about. The second section relates the three types of his poems. The third section explores unique artistic characteristics of poems by discussing rhythms and images.The second chapter probes into Wu's essay writing. With his profound Chinese and foreign languages'skills, Mr. Wu, as a learned scholar who enjoys high prestige among overseas experts, has composed essays not only related to western literature but also concerning Chinese classics. The first and second section focuses on his essays on Western literature, while the third section pays attention to the essays on Chinese classics.The last chapter points out that both Wu's poetry writing and essay writing are worth academic research. Some scholars of 1990s equate Wu Xinghua with Qian Zhongshu. He absorbs nutrition of western countries and inherits the traditions of classical Chinese poetry. He has a wide range of interest in Elizabethan dramas, modern poetry in 20^th century and classical Chinese literature. Thus he has been accomplished in those fields, which makes him a special landscape in modern Chinese literary world.
