Signage design is a direct mode of visual communication that has been widely applied to the environment, or attached to architectural spaces. With the careful choice and rendition of typefaces, pictograms, and colors, the signage system analyzes the spacial hierarchy and guide people's movement and action inside a certain environment. Environment is the starting point for signage design, while users stand at its end point. The functionality of signage design make it a crucial part of the overall spacial arrangement, the building style and shaping of culture. In modern society, the uncertainty in destinations and routes give rise to psychological and emotional fluctuations, and user's demand of information has become more complex and diverse. Whether in fixed or temporary contexts, humanistic and emotional concerns should constitute the principle of signage design and their value cannot be overstated.This thesis analyzes the functional and spiritual value of signage design with focused discussion on environmental constitutions and formal components. Based on established theories in design value analysis, communication, semiotics and visual cognitive psychology, it explored the demand situations and formal elements of signage design in fulfilling functional and emotional needs, the methodology in humanistic design, and reveals the significance of a composite research of both the functional and the spiritual value of signage design.
