On The Development Of Mining Technology In Modern Britain

The British coal industry was in the ascendant from the 18th century to the first ten odd years of the 20th century. With the development of coal-mining technology, the coal industry became the leading sector in the UK's industry which provided sufficient energy for manufacturing, transport, and iron and steel industry. In this thesis, we will research mainly from the technology point of view, analyzing the development history of the British modern coal-mining technology, so as to highlight the important role of technology development in the history of the British coal industry, making people have a clear idea about the dialectical relationship between modern Britain and energy development.There were a lot of research both in china and abroad that studied the history of the modern British coal industry and economic development, many books and papers published. But there were few papers from a technical point to study the technological progress of British coal-mining during the 18th century to the first ten odd years of 20th century and most domestic research focused on the contemporary advance. In the light of this, this thesis attempts to give a more detailed and systematic discussion on the progress of modern British mining technology and characteristics of the development, making people have a relatively comprehensive understanding to the British coal industry during this period. Among them, the key to this paper is technology innovation in the British coal-mining during eighteenth century to the early twentieth century. This paper mainly contains the following four parts:The first part, we will mainly discuss from two aspects, that is the technical elements of coal mining and the British early mining situation, introducing the background of modern British mining technology when it's began, paving the way for the following discussion. Firstly, make a brief description of the production and safety technology which were needed in the process of coal production so that clarify the technical elements necessary for mining. Secondly, summarize the early British coal mining activities. People tried to use the coal in daily life and production. The coal trade has been arisen and coal-mining activities were generally expanded, but at this stage the British coal-mining technology still was in its infancy.The second part, by analyzing the progress of production technology and safety technology and management as well in Britain coal mining industry during the 18th century to the early 19th century, expound British coal mining and technology increasingly systematic development during this period. At this stage the Britain coal-mining technology brake through the original and natural way both in the production and safety aspect, arising many new inventions, especially the application of the machine. In the process of coal production, safety has increasingly become a key factor, so safety technology improved greatly.The third part of the thesis, we will talk about the following aspects:from the middle of the 19th century, the coal-mining technology improved gradually, and the safety technology further developed; in the early 20th century, the new technology was applied to the production, the law was made to regulate the mining activities. Based on the maturing of coal-mining technology in the mid-nineteenth century, from the early 20th century mechanization began to infiltrated in various aspect of coal mining, electric energy was used in many collieries. Under the pressure of frequent mine explosion Legislative Monitoring was broadly concerned.The forth part summarizes the impact and features of modern Britain coal-mining technology. From the three aspects which were closely related to the progress of the Britain coal mining technology, analyzing the dialectical relationship between the Britain coal-mining technology and the coal industry, the Industrial Revolution and British population growth.
