"The reform of nationality", as a profound trend of recent China's society, is a revolution in the process of modernization of China. The reform of nationality, inevitably accompanied by the pursuit of modern culture, within which the culture of modern music has also been transformed. This paper taking"the reform of nationality"as a starting point and analysing the time from 1898 to the1919, based on the influence on music culture with this trend, divides the period to three stages: 1898 reform movement, the revolution of 1911, the May 4th movement. Through the research of music thought and practical change, the author analyzes the process of the penetration of the trend towards the culture of modern music in order to link this change to social reform to provide a relatively new and broader view of the culture of recent music. Meanwhile in the aspect of the phenomenon, creation and practice in Chinese recent music, the author also provides more comprehensive understanding and interpretation.
