Westernization Movement Zhili Army Transformation

From 1860s to 1890s, the military modernization movement taking roop training rms making as the core and acted as the main contents of the Western Affairs Movement had greatly influenced the military innovation in the late period of Qing Dynasty, Zhili surrounded the capital , was the first province of carrying out the military innovation, and it was also the ealiest birthplace of the modern new army. This paper contains three sections to state the military innovation in Zhili. The first section illustates that the Qing goverment , on the condition of the army s corruption & incompetence, decides to retify the army and train the troop. Baqi, Green standard initiates the western style training movement. Liu Changyou who takes advantage of the experience of Brave battalion institution for reference es- tablishes the retrained Green standard in Zhli. Zeng Guofan continues this work, thoroughly blending the Brave battalion institution into the retrained Green stan- dard and makes a great effective progress. The second part expounds that Li Hongzhang, ameliorates the army s weapon and equipment, develops the army s comprehensive quality and promotes the modernization process of ZhiLi army. The third section shows the historical position of Zhili military innovation, which is gradually deepened during the Western Affairs Movement , has been standing at the head of national military innovation, and playing the leading role of military innovation in other provinces, furthermore, which provides objective conditions and rich lessons for the new army after the Sino Japanese war in 1894 1895, and inflences greatly on military & politics in the late Qing and early Republic of China.
