The study of Xie Lingyun is a hot literaiy topic of Liuchao. People have paid attention to the social foundation of Xie lingyun's works but neglected the influence of the patriarchal clan and local culture. Mr. Chen Yinque says: he learning and religion of Winjin Nanbei Chao have close relation ship with the historical studies of Shizu in learning field at present. How the clan culture has influenced literature and art, especially Xie Lingyun, is blank by far. This thesis attempts to inquire into the influence of the clan culture to Xie lingyun. The thesis consists of three sections. Section One, the abrupt rising of Xie clan and its cultural tradition. There are four parts in the section. The first part introduces the emerging of Xie clan by its members Xie Shang, Xie Yi, Xie Xuan, Xie Hun and so on. The second part sums up the four characters of Shizu. Third part probes into the cultural tradition of xie clan under given historic sulTounding. It include: 1. Tradition of Xuanxue, 2. Mixture of filling an office and living in seclusion. 3. Sincere love of mountain and water. The last part introduces the mountain-water clan literature before Xie Lingyun. Section Two, the influence of clan tradition. The section have three parts. The first part discusses the clan tradition and Xie Lingyun's tragedy. Xie Lingyun's characteristics of amous person such us holding extreme views, despising courtesy & self-willed, are shaped by his clan tradition. He is not put in an important position because of his characteristics of amous person and his lack of political consciousness and foresight. Xie Lingyun's viewpoints of clan result in his raving official career and he wavering between being an official and a hermit; the essential reason of Xie Lingyun's tragedy is the conflict between the ideal and reality. The second part tallies with the affect of Buddhism upon Xie Lingyun. The association of Buddhists and Shizu provides Xie Lingyun with a preliminary understanding of Buddhism; Xie Lingyun's idea of Buddhism has been mainly influenced by Huiyuan's Boruo Learning and Zhu Daosheng's Foxing Learning; Xie Lingyun's mountain-water poetiy include four layers: confusion, observation, realization and philosophic theory. The third part is double interpretation of the comments on he clearness in his poetry; he clearness of Xuanxue at an earlier stage and style of literature at the later stage, the source of fresh style, the shaping process of dense and sumptuous style. Xie Lingyun is a turning point in the transformation of poetry style from rtificial to legance in Nanbei Chao. The last section inquires into the productive origin of mountain- water poetry. The thesis concludes that Shizu's cultural tradition is the main interior origin. The social environment is the exterior pressure. The time's innovation and individual experience are the later motive power, and Xie Lingyun's own talent is the nucleus of the establishment of mountain-water poetry.
