Today foreign language has become more and more significant in our lives.As a weighty tool to absorb and exchange information (especially English), it really helpsindividuals to survive in this highly competitive society and greatly benefits thedevelopment of our country. By the entry of WTO, this trend will become more definite.Accordingly foreign language has become a basic subect in our elementary and highereducation Pushed by these social needs, foreign language teaching research has alsooverstepped the stage based on general linguistics and enered into the new phasefounded on the theories from Cognitive science, Second Language Acqusition andneurolinguistics and etc. The research has begun to combine the efforts from linguistics,social science and computer science to deal with the problems from foreign languageteaching.But there are some serious chal1enges which multi-field foreign language teachingresearch must face with, such as, what indeed can these new efforts contribute to research?How does this comprehensive viewpoint improve the foreign language teaching? Does itbring some new problems? How can we meet them? By describing the different cognitiveperspectives on language, the paper tried to show the difference among several researchfields on the same prob1em, and drew attention to the unavoidab1e difficulties in foreign1anguage teaching research when adopting a multi-field perspective. And based on thereality of foreign language teaching in China, proposed that there 1acked the basicintegration from different researches and there is no cooperation, so the foreign languageteaching from a multi-field perspective was immature. At last, after analyzing severalstrategies employed now, the author suggested that it is impprtant to compose researchgroups by researchers from different fields to meet the needs of today's multi-fieldresearch in foreign language teaching. The paper provides some reflections on the thisnew trend frOm foreign language teaching research in order to help the researchers tocope with it more wisely...
