The chief objective of the thesis is to research the image of knight in the times of Romanticism. The period is from the year 1773 to the year 1845 in which the spirit of the knight revived. There are some countries in the paper mainly including England, France, German, Russia and so forth. On one hand, instead of limiting to comparison of only several aspects, the text is premised on international background and looks back not only upon Middle Ages and Renaissance, but also upon the Romantic Period as well. On the other hand, by utilizing some literary and cultural theories such as Cultural Anthropology, Psychoanalytical Criticism, Myth and Archetypal Criticism and Reader-Response Criticism, and Hermeneutics, the paper carries on various perspective analyses. In addition, in order to expound on characters of varied knights in different times, nationalities and societies, the paper selects several aspects concerning present conditions, reviviscent reasons, imagic heritages, reacting to realities and narrative techniques. This thesis is generally divided into five parts. Finally, this text is involved in the researching of some narrative and representing techniques including the dialogue between opposed roles, the perception of distance, the effect of communication and synaesthesia, paradoxand satire, symbol and allegory, mask and exaggeration and so forth.In short, this thesis discusses knights, not only as a potent political, social and cultural force, but also as living people who embody the values of ethical, emotional and aesthetic aspects.
