As a famous conception which has been widely discussed in the field of Chinese literature, "Western theories are substance and Chinese culture is function "means that besides learning the useful western theories and methods of thinking , Chinese writers should know how to put them into their writing practice and use them as references to rebuild as well as rethink traditional Chinese culture. And "tragedy consciousness" , one of the most important western aesthetic categories, is a part of main content of ''western theories" which absorbed and modified in Chinese ways by Chinese avant-garde writers constantly. In this article, the tragedy consciousness of Chinese contemporary avant-garde novels will be discussed in the following four aspects: the collapse of the faith of "human being"; the sadness to the withering history; the incapability to face fortune and chanciness; and the crisis of the doomsday. Moreover, the article will discuss both the significance and limitation of Chinese contemporary avant-garde writers' practice of "Western theories are substance and Chinese culture is function ".
