This thesis focuses on the cultural meanings of Miss Pageant analyzing by anthropology theories mainly according to the case of "2003 Miss Chinese Universe Pageant" which was held by Phoenix Satellite TV.Today more and more Miss Pageant actions occur widely in China The phenomena have intimate relationships with special context: SARS, Chinese political and economic policies, etc. However, there are approaches from anthropology to Miss Pageant, such as the issue of power and construction of identity between them. What we actually concern is to put the classical topics of traditional anthropology into new, dynamic and academic context. The study of Miss Pageant is a breakthrough that exploits the new area and enriches anthropology theory. Based on very limited references available I found that almost all the relative researches about Miss Pageant regarded it as static, point, or simple functional and symbolic matter. In my demonstration, I'll overcome the defects above in somewhat.I can finish the paper also because I have taken the part-time job at phoenix TV for 4 months-the duration of the competition, I have convenient with investigation and interview. Using television, Internet, and newspaper materials is one of features in my thesis. Meanwhile, I emphasize the usage of cross-subjects research such as Culture Study to illustrate the cultural meanings of Miss Pageant. How can we recognize the cultural meaning of Miss Pageant is the main index of the thesis, and the answer makes the proposal that classical topics are laid in the new area to be true, and it also verifies the unique idea of anthropological view. Such a conclusion can be drawn: Miss Pageant is a kind of culture. It is a special production of society. I discuss cultural meanings of the Miss Pageant and highlight the idea: beauty is up to you!
