During Tang dynasty prosper of calligraphy and poem provided the development ofpoems on calligraphy with good chance. Before tang dynasty articles on calligraphy,which were nearly ornate dictions, had existed. Poems on calligraphy did not beginuntil the early tang dynasty. Cen Wenben and Li Jiao were the first who wrote poemson calligraphy. The development of poems on calligraphy was divided into twophrases: maturity and height. Li Jiao, Li Qi and Li Bai's first approval of "skeleton"and "spirit"contributed much to the maturity of poems on calligraphy. Then Du Fusang the praises of both of them, which became the ideal of calligraphy and theory ofcalligraphy consequently. So Du Fu can be regarded as the pivot of the developmentof poems on calligraphy. After that Han Yu, Liu Zongyuan and Liu Yuxi contributedrespectively to poems on calligraphy."Grace and strength"characterized style of calligraphy, as was from poets of Li Jiaoand Li Bai. It can be seen from poems on calligraphy, such as reintegration of sealscript and official script, ecstasy of grass characters, influence of calligraphy sage.The plumpness of calligraphy in the middle of Tang was to make obedience to thesovereign and win his favor; calligraphers whose style was solidity like Xu Shu werefavor of "skeleton". In fact Du Fu's opinion on "skeleton" and "spirit" wascalligraphers` common interest. Furthermore Zhang Xu 's style is strength and Haisu'sis toughness; seal script and official script did not always have a certain tendency ofplumpness. So Han Yu's disapproval of Youjun's calligraphy was actually favor of"grace and strength". "Skeleton"and "spirit", the core of poems on calligraphy andthe pith of the theory of calligraphy, are in complete harmony.It is the first time to study systemically poems on calligraphy of Tang dynasty. Poemsand theory on calligraphy form aesthetics of Tang dynasty with theories of writingspoems and paintings, and influence the posterity greatly. After it developed from thebeginning to the height during Tang dynasty poems on calligraphy became theintellectuals'significant mains of praising calligraphy in Song dynasty and from thenon.
