"quality" Rather Than "culture" Of The Times

When China came into the period in which the book was made of papers, the style taken on single appearance.The book with modern meaning was coming followed the May Fourth, New Culture Movement. One of the considerable discussion and researching problem in this article is that how to bring about the new esthetic style of the book decoration and design, how to develop it, and what kind of inspiration we shall have facing nowadays design since the May Fourth Period. "To depend on history, you can realize the rise and fall." This article intends to show concern on present and declares the future by arranging and researching the thread of history. This is also my writing aim.As for the research method, the article takes an important person Wen Yiduo to be a fragment of history and gives us explanation, avoiding to empty talk. It is very representative that there is a general moral character the man of letters owned after The New Culture Movement.This article is divided to two parts. The first part is to interpret three problems: 1. The Wen Yiduo design background. 2. The person of Wen. 3. The definition of the book design. All conclusions will depend on the first part, just as establishing the coordinate that is made up three axes x y z in the time and space of history. The article is striving for accurate and objective. Meanwhile, three clues have constructed the important part to interpret the topic of this article.The second part is made up four chapters. The Wen Yiduo design has been analyzed from four aspects, 1. Western culture in modern times and the Chinese designers—the international problem of design; 2. Artist and design—the relationship between art and design; 3. Calligraphy and seal influenced on the design—design and the Chinese symbol; 4. The Man of letters design—the culture self-cultivation of the designer. We have to obtain the conclusion by analyzing the topic from four aspects:The book decoration and design at the Wen age is the one that the spirit beyond the style on the surface. This is not the perfect artistic conception of design, but undoubtedly will to possess the inspiration for the nowadays design condition. The unity of spirit and style is the purpose we have been seeking.
