During the Spanish-American War of 1898, America got the Philippines,Guam and Puerto Rico, made Cuba into her subsidiary country, andofficially annexed Hawaiian islands. From February 1899 to July 1902, thegovernment of America put down the rebellion of Filipinos, and made thePhilippines became its colony. American people strong protested againstthe oversea expansion and colony war which made by the government ofAmerica, and brought about a huge Anti-Imperialist movement. This article analyzes the huge Anti-Imperialist movement from theglobal history view ,and learned the lesson from the standpoint of Americanew-left historians. This article was divided into five parts. The firstpart analyzed the domestic and international background that theAnti-Imperialist movement produced. In the domestic, by the effect ofsecond Industrial Revolution, USA became one of the strongest economicalcountries in the world. At the same time, because of the development ofmonopolism, USA needed greatly the oversea market and raw material place,so three economic crises during late the 19th century aggravated themonopolistic propertied class to begin with oversea expansion. Theexpansionism tradition during the history of USA supplied theexpansionists with thought weapons, history experience and theory tools. But the popularization of oversea expansion was strongly objected by somepeople, because it violated the democratism principle and isolationismtradition. In the international society, between the 1890s and1920s,European powers were crazily dividing up the world, when USA wantedto eat the cake, the project had been finished. In order to set up a colonyempire compared to the economic power of USA, USA government hurried tothe oversea expansion. The second part tells the origin of the Anti-Imperialist League. Afterthe civil war, some people had been against the oversea expansion in USA,but they were not organized. In USA, a huge and organized Anti-Imperialistmovement did not happen until the founding of Boston Anti-ImperialistLeague in June 1898.This part included the fundamental law of theAnti-Imperialist League, leading officers and so on.The third part introduces the main participants of theAnti-Imperialist League. It included Mugwump who were engaged in the textofficer reform sport between the 1970s and 1980s,for example Carl Schurz;Democrats of the Democratic Party and the Republican Party who wereanti-Imperialists, George Sewall Boutwell and George Hoar are Republicans,Cleveland and William Jennings Bryan were Democrats;in the cultural fieldand educational circles, they were David Starr Jordan and Mark Twain;theywere Samuel Gompers in the labor field;and they were Andrew Carnegie inthe economic boundary;there were also some racialists. This part alsoanalyzed the reason that they were against imperialism and their mainideas about imperialism. The fourth part is focused on the anti-Imperialist movements 1898—1921.There were preparations for several presidential elections during1900 — 1920,such as petition with many signatures, propagandistmaterial ,public speeches, and the main changes of the participants foranti-imperialist movements. The fifth part is devoted to probing the historical effect of theAnti-Imperialist movement. In my opinion, the Anti-Imperialist movementrectified the traditional expansion model which operated by force andoversea colonization between the 1890s and 1920s.It made the United Statedwalk up a new expansion way which marked by peace and gradual expansionin the twentieth century, and benefited the development of internationalrelation.
