Liang Shi-Qiu is a rather outstanding and controversial critic in the history of Chinese modern literary criticism. Through absorbing extensively and combining the idea of Chinese traditional Confucian ethic and the neo-humanism of Irving Babbitt, Liang Shi-Qiu constructed a set of critical system for classic in which humanity is regarded as the core. He persisted in the system and held distance between the mainstream literature and this system, wandered between the tradition and modernness. Liang Shi-Qiu struggled to maintain the "health" of literature and the "dignity" of intellectuals in the particular cultural context which is in the dilemma of reach the golden mean. Some modernity appeals were manifested in the contest between the time and the situation. The present paper analysed systematically and profoundly the origin of Liang Shi-Qiu's literal criticism as well as the classic critical system through basing on the particular critical texts of Liang Shi-Qiu and abiding by the principle of the synthesis of the concreteness and history. The paper stressed on the analysis and discussion of the reason for the criticism of such state as adhesion and alienation between Liang Shi-Qiu's thought and the temporal criticism, and that of the inconsistent "closing"and "opening" state of the people who put forward such criticisms. Putting Liang Shi-Qiu's literal criticism against the background of Multiculturalism in the new century, the present paper attempted to reexamine the style and stance of Liang Shi-Qiu's literal criticism from the perspective of "modernity". In addition, the present paper explored the reasonable part of Liang Shi-Qiu's literal criticism in the temporal context and its significance for the construction of the contemporary literal criticism, which would provide Liang Shi-Qiu's literal criticism, an unfinished topic in the field of literal criticism, a relatively new study perspective and a beneficial reference.
