The drastic social change of contemporary China directly led to thetransformation of Chinese culture from content to structure, which furtherresulted in the fundamental changes in education system and educationmode. From the end of 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century,the music education at school had been recognized gradually whilewestern music culture was introduced into China and recent-modernschool was established. A brand-new one, different from Chinese ancientmusic education style and system, was in the gradual formation and laterbecame the mainstream in the field of Chinese music education in 20thcentury. There appeared the first generation music educationists, manypioneers and initiators in the field of music education during theestablishment and development of Chinese music education. They laidthe first cornerstone in the building of our national music educationthrough their practice of music education. They fostered a group of musictalents for the first time in our contemporary music education which had afar-reaching significance to the later generations. It is well-known thatnormal school (including the musical education of normal school) is a"matrix education" for training teachers. In recent times the achievementsin school musical education have something to do with the normal schoolmusical education. Hereby this article will focus on Mr. Mengfei Wu, afamous educationist in contemporary China, analyzed and studied Mengfei Wu's MUSIC textbook for facility normal school, explored themusic education thoughts in the contents and frames in his MUSICtextbook for facility normal school and made objective and fair commentson his historic contributions to the normal school music education.According to Marxism historic view, one person may be assessedpositively or negatively in history by determining whether he ispromoting or impeding historic progress, rather than highlighting thedetails of his thoughts and behaviors. First and foremost, one's historicposition depends on his objective deeds and mistakes rather thansubjective words and behaviors. Thus, the criteria to assess historicpeople should be historic rather than ethic. It is certain that we should notfocus on one's subjective words and thoughts but on one's objectivedeeds unless his moral character had negative impact in history. Thehuman being is mortal who has merits and weaknesses. Therefore, Ibelieve we should be objective while analyzing and studying MengfeiWu's MUSIC textbook for facility normal school.MUSIC textbook for facility normal school is based on TheCurriculum Standard for Facility Normal School and Facility RuralNormal School (published in March 1934) written by Mengfei Wu. It isthe products from his normal school management and teaching practice.This textbook is not only written with a new teaching concept, clearpurpose and "student-based" principle, but also scientific, professional, practical, contemporary and comprehensive which has reference valuein contents and thoughts in the field of music textbooks till now. Theweakness of the book is that it focuses merely on subject itself whileignores humanism; stresses on the scientific system of textbooks withoutconsidering the usage and acceptance of the users.In this article, the author, guided by Marxism dialectical materialismand historic materialism has tried hard to assess him fairly andobjectively with methods of historic study, document study, individualstudy, generalization study and the unity of theory and practice, historyand logic. This article is innovative as follows:●Firstly, the topic is original. Looking back on the 20th centuryresearch in the field of musical education theory in China, there hasnot been much studies on Mengfei Wu apart from a few roughresearch papers and the mentioning of him in some relevantexclusive books.●Secondly, the historical documents are comprehensive. No one wasfound to have studied Mr. Mengfei Wu's MUSIC textbook forfacility normal school, moreover, he has not been mentioned insome exclusive books on Chinese musical education.●Finally, argumentation is innovative. This article has conducted asystematic, comprehensive and dynamic analysis on Mr. Mengfei Wu's MUSIC textbook for facility normal school and made ahistorical comment on its contemporary significance.
