The development of music education system in China changes intensely from mid-1960s to the early 21st century. Music education in China suffered severe damage due to the "Cultural Revolution" during 1966 to 1976. At the same time, primary and junior middle school music education became the appendage of political activities. After this, turbulent period, from the 10 years 1978 to 1989, music education gradually returned to order and attention has been given to the importance of music education. The education Commission of the Chinese government promulgated two sets of primary and junior middle school music curricula during this decade. Music program turned back to the natural track step by step. During the 1990s, China began attaching importance to the normal and scientific character of the music courses, while has increasingly promulgated a new music curriculum for primary and junior middle schools in 1992 or issued a notice or art classes in ordinary senior middle school in 1994 respectively. Meanwhile, music teaching materials compilation and training of teachers have been greatly improved. The development of primary and junior school music curriculum in China demonstrates a tendency of becoming diversification since it the ends 21st century. Development of the music curriculum in China in the prot four decades mirrored the progress of our contemporary music education.In this dissertation, I sorted out a main clue on the development of the music curriculum in the last forty years. My research findings provided definite theoretical and historical information which may lead to a further understanding or the history of music education in China. It also supplies reference information for the further development of music education and implementation of music curriculum reform in the future.
