This dissertation is to study the development of school music curriculum during the seventeen years after the founding of the People's Republic of China. Based on the data collected, analyzed, and studied, the author compares school music curriculum of the modern time in China with these of foreign countries, summarizes the characteristics of school music curriculum in contemporary China. Moreover, this dissertation raises questions on the reform of music curriculum.This dissertation consists of three parts:Part one: the development of school curriculum in the initial stage of the People's Republic of China (1949-1956). Through the decrees and curriculum issued by the government, the teaching materials, the teaching staff and extracurricular activities, the dissertation studies and explores the actual situation at that time.Part two: The development of school curriculum during the years 1957-1966. The dissertation demonstrates that school music curriculum cooperates with political campaigns, such as the change of education policy, the changes, occurred in school curriculum, the modification of the teaching programmes and the issue of the teaching staff.Part three: Comparative studies of the school music curriculum in modern China with that of the contemporary China, as well as with those of the United Satates and Russia.
