The purpose of this study is to explore Uygur and Han junior school students'family environment and mental health characteristics,and to study the relationship between family environment and mental health characteristics, and to have a comparative study on the traits of the two kinds of the characteristics above.The study result would have a theoretical significance on enriching and consummating middle school students'mental research and have a practical significance on instructing mental health education in middle schools in a minority area.With the aid of questionnaires and documentary methods etc., family environment, mental health characteristics and their relationship of 623 Uygur and Han junior school students'have been investigated.This study uses the self-designed questionnaires,Family Environment Scale and Mental Health Scale as measuring instruments. This study takes parents' job, parents' literacy degree and family structure as hard family environment,parents' method of upbringing,and ten elements in Family Environment Scale as soft family environment. This study regards a family as a whole, and discusses the relationship between the family environment and mental health of the Uygur and Han junior school students by means of systematic research.The results mainly show that: (1)The basic circs of the junior school students of the Uygur and Han nationalities is that most of them are parental familities,most of the parents are peasant and their literacy degree are low, (2) In achievement orientation, Intellectual-Cultural Orientation, Active-Recreational Orientation and the Control of the families of the ethnic group of Uygur are higher than the ethnic group of Han's, As a whole, the level of mental health of the ethnic group of Uygur is lower than the ethnic group of Han. (3) Family environment is an important factor that influence the mental health of the Uygur and Han junior school students, The result show that the Cohesion,Expressiveness, Conflict, Achievement Orientation, and the moral emphasis is correlate with the mental health of the Uygur and Han junior school students by the Family Environment Scale, so the soft family environment makes a more evident influence on the Uygur and Han junior school students' mental health than hard family environment does.
