It has been more then a century's journey since"Arrivée d'un trainàla Ciotat, L"as the birth of the cinema shown by the French Lumière brothers in a caféin 1895. The rapid development in technology brought the tremendous changes in terms of expression in film. From the monochrome to the Technicolor; from the single sound channel to the stereophonic sound; from the silent films to the phonofilm; from the standard screen to the wide screen, that the scientific technology surly gave a new birth to the film industry. In 1970s, Lucas and his company Digital Apprentice Workshop developed gradually the computer graphic technology to the film productions with"Star Wars"and others. Since then, Cinema started its technological innovation."Computer Games"is also called the"computer reciprocal arts", of which, it regarded as the"ninth art"after painting, sculpture, architecture, music, poetry, dance, theatre and film. Since its birth, the industry of"Computer Games"only spent less than thirty years to surpass the film industry in its market and sales. One can see the immeasurable market potential and the astonishing development in speed of this"ninth art".The computer games and the feature films are collaborated mutually in the 21 century. Many computer games had been reproduced into the different films. It showed us a trend of fusion, interactive and cross-boundary in this new entertainment media. Normally, once an excellent computer game reproduced into the film, it could be an instant success in the box office; and it could also reflect the film influence back to the game's sale. Thus, that"one plus one over two"is achieved effectively. This thesis uses"Residence Evil"as a cut-in point to analyze its development from a computer game to a film. Trough this process, we can gain some understanding of the nature of a computer game, and how it had been developed into a feature film.
