The Development Of The Republic Of Badges And Artistic Features

The first half years in twentieth century is an important period for China's transformation from a traditional society to a modern and contemporary society, during which the state power changes frequently and the society is in great disturbance.As a special medium for recording history,badges in Republic of China not only reflect social changes in China,but also bear historical information in political,military and cultural aspect.This thesis mainly studies on the different badges in Republic of China,such as national emblem,party emblem,medals and so on.By sorting out the basic clues for the development of these badges,the historical reason for their development will be displayed and their cultural and artistic connotations will be explored.This thesis will be divided into two parts.The first part is to sort out the historical clues for the development of badges in Republic of China from three stages on a macro level.This part will respectively list and discuss badges of different political camps and social groups,and try to explain the reasons for the development of badges in different social backgrounds.In the early stage,badges in Republic of China have clearly been transformed from foreign ones.The mid-stage is a critical period for their development,for example,badges of Nationality Government of China and Red political power have a great variety and have relatively formed a complete system.In the late stage,badges have been popularized and accepted by all levels of the society.Badges issued by Red political power become the mainstream and play a tremendous role in political propaganda during the period of the war resisted Japanese aggression and the civil war.The second part is to analyze the artistic features of different type of badges in Republic of China.The basic idea for their designation will be analyzed from four aspects:the external form,the symbolic decorations and graphs,the form of imprinted character and the unique layout.The designation of badges in Republic of China shows that the Chinese people make foreign things to serve them and gradually make them localized and modernized.Moreover,badges of Republic of China occupy an important status in China's modern artistic design,even in the development of modern art.Based on large amount of historical documents and picture materials,this thesis applies the methodology of history,sociology and picture science to make an overall analysis on the badges in Republic of China and examines the badges from the perspective of visual culture.
