Western Expressionist Painting Imagery And Metaphor,

In the modem art developing history, expressionism is a very important art ideological trend and school. It was born at the early 20^th century and it has a deep influence on the development of modern art. At the 80s of the 20^th century, this influence conducted great achievement in the new expressionism's returning of painting. The new expressionism is the inheritance and development of the traditional expressionism. But due to the different ages, the new expressionism and the traditional expressionism are different in art ideas, topic selecting and forms of expressions. However, both utilize a mass of image and metaphor in artistic creation to express the artists' probing to the society, history and life. This paper tidy up the origin and development of expressionism, select some works of traditional expressionism and new expressionism to analyze their expression patterns in image and metaphor. Meanwhile, the paper attempts to discuss the relationship between image and metaphor when they are applied in the art of expressionism.
