| This dissertation analyses and explores the origin, evolvement and future of the Taiwan Betelnut Culture from a visual designer's approach, and is composed from the author's perspective both as a Taiwan local and a woman. Through combining this Taiwan local feature with the means of visual design, it seeks to extract from the phenomena a cultural value that could be more widely appreciated.Observing from a third-person, objective observation, the dissertation poses the question whether the involvement of visual design can give the Betelnut Culture a different future prospect? Is there any inherent cultural value that could enjoy wider public appeal?Applying a systematic and logical approach to the research of the Betelnut culture, the author based her own graduate design project on an in-depth and clear examination and analysis of existing literatures related to the issue, so that the final design project would resonate with the dissertation. It is the author's hope that through such an attempt, a potential value could be identified, and furthermore, the relationship between such a unique phenomenon and its social background could be further understood and dealt with from a visual design approach. The Betelnut visual culture cannot only be freely appropriated by various art and design practices, its unique cultural character can also provide inspiration for various creative personnels. The Betelnut is so much more than a snack, it could be exhibited as art.Only after the process did I come to have a great expectation about the future development and unknown possibilities of the Betelnut Culture.
