In this paper, I try to analysis the image of Dale on one of Faulkner's work "As I Lay Dying" , so we can find a more profound grasp of the Faulkner's love to the South and Southern people, it also reflect the the social conditions and the inner grief of the American South and the Southerns ,who's in the transition from the old time to the modern time. Faulkner has deconstructed the traditional literary image so as to present the reader a fragmented modern social life, and revealed the ridiculousness and morbidity of the human beings in an absurd society . Through specific text analysis, our aim is to show the comprehensive anatomical characters of Dale and the social significance behind Dale.Paper is divided into three chapters.Chapter I, mainly expounds the Origin of the Dale. From "Dale of Yoknapatawpha " and "Dale of Western Literature 'crazy - Prophet' tradition " ,We explaine the lives of the characters in the basis of this, an account of their historical background and cultural heritage. Faulkner also clarify the deep South Complex, in the contemplation of such complex, the better the image of the character of Dale.Chapter II, mainly discusses the dual nature of Dale, this is the main part of the article .At the time of transition from the old traditional and modern, Faulkner himself showed double values, his contradiction inevitably affects the characters in his woks. On the one hand, Dale's words and deeds showed the characteristics of a madman, the estrangement and alienation of modern society and lost family love, finally led Dale to die . On the other hand, Dale as a prophet-like figure, he is omniscient and omnipotent and understands all the community clearly and has a clear insight on the profound dilemmas of human thinking.Dale became the "alternative Christ" under the mythical metaphor . In addition, as the Southern Christian writer, Faulkner's writing deeply affected by Christianity; as a modernist writer, William Faulkner for the stream of consciousness, interior monologue, and other modern manifestations of the use of techniques to further deepen the theme of the works.Chapter III, mainly Explain the value and significance of Dale. Faulkner often reference "They are enduring" and "Human is immortal" to analyze his thought, combined with the two points we may understand the performance of Faulkner's ultimate concern for human values and on the plight of the deep concerns of human existence. Total represents the southern state of poor whites living, although the failure of Dale's resistance, in the course of human history dale is immortal. "enduring" itself is "immortal," which Faulkner gives a great deal of confidence.By shaping the image of Dale Faulkner was thinking Southern poor whites, and all of the southerners of the United States and even the survival of mankind as a whole situation , and made positive efforts. To be one of the key persons to save the Burdens as a prophet-like , Dale finally being locked up in a lunatic asylum, indirectly declared the end of its life. Alienation in the diaphragm and under the ignorance of the Burdens performance in a play a large turnout. Total tragic lament and reflect on our end, Dale's crazy-the prophet-like performance in the literary history of the added touch of splendor. Characters by Faulkner's works are on his mind and moral reconstruction of the old Southern tradition of hope, he will not give up hope.In the root link of South Complex, Faulkner explored the entire human "enduring" and "immortal", affirmed that the human virtue of "courage, honor, hope, pride, sympathy, compassion and sacrifice" will eventually overcome the difficulties. So,"Eternal, lasts."...
