After World War Ⅱ, the Korean peninsula is split up into two separate countries, North Korea and South Korea. As one of the most important regions in the Northeast Asian, political developments of the Korean peninsula haunt people all over the world. Top leaders in both North Korea and South Korea holding the supreme authority have brought the country onto the road toward development. Each succession of leaders attracts attention all over the world. Though the two countries originate from the same ethnicity, each of them has its distinct way of succession. What on earth causes the difference? Many people have been curious and puzzled about it. Therefore, this paper will give a thorough investigation about it.At present, the succession of South Korea leaders is on the way to democratic election with the first female president elected in Northeast Asia. However, the road to democracy is not smooth in South Korea. It has gone through many setbacks, such as dictatorship and military coup. North Korea, a socialist country, has just completed three generations of hereditary system. It is still marching in isolation with the succession of leaders unchanged. It is said that the economic development pushes the democratic elections in South Korea; the repressive policies maintain the hereditary rule in North Korea. In fact, the development of anything in the world is the outcome of external factors and internal factors as well as of international environment and subtle domestic factors. This paper will give a comprehensive analysis in factors concerning history, politics, economy, international environment by conducting a comparative study between the two countries. At last, it will disclose different factors influencing ways of succession and make a prediction about it in the future.
