Longdong, the east of Gansu province of China for short, contributed a lot to the Chinese Liberation War. As an essential part of border areas of Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia, Longdong has played a significant and sound role in spreading the revolutionary thoughts and keeping the revolution line of the Chinese Communist Party. Early in the historical Yanan period, the pioneer communist members as Xi Zhongxun(father of the present Chinese chairman Xi Jinping)and Liu Zhidan, established revolutionary base there.Longdong’s convention of singing folk songs provided strong basis for developing the revolutionary music. People there began to sing for the revolution early since the late 1920 s through the early 1930 s, when the Soviet government was established there. With Yanan becoming the center of the revolution in 1937, Longdong revolution music was naturally brought there. What’s more, the " Yanan literature and art symposium" held in 1942 raised the Longdong revolution music to its peak in development. At that time, Longdong revolution music inspired local people to actively cooperate with the revolutionary activities there, and served as a powerful weapon to destroy the national enemy.Led by the Communist Party, then, a great number of literal and art organizations, workers in this field and some normal people collected and adapted a number of the local folk songs, through which, the features of being “vocative and revolutionary” of such songs formed and grew gradually.Longdong revolutionary music is a historic product, an irreplaceable period in Chinese modern music and an important part of the culture circle of Shaanxi- Gansu-Ningxia(the culture circle including the three provinces of Shaanxi, Gansu and Ningxia). By conducting a series of field work as interviewing some local scholars and reading relative literatures, the writer of this paper made a thorough observation on Longdong revolutionary music, in the perspective of its music activities and works. Consequently, the paper discovered the historic value of this sort of music, discussed its present state, and raised advice on how to keep and develop this specific music.
