Research On Military Cooperation Between Singapore And The United States After The Cold War

Although the cold war had finished, the collapse of Soviet Union didn’t decline the military cooperation between Singapore and the U.S. There are many common strategic interests between Singapore and US so they strengthened their military cooperation to achieve double win. Up to the present, the content of military cooperation between Singapore and the U.S becomes deeper and wider then it reaches a high level in quality and quantity in the world. This high level military cooperation is concerned by other Southeast Asia countries and China and it will bring some effect for these countries.This thesis wills attention to analyze and discuss the military cooperation of Singapore and the U.S after the cold war from these main four aspects completely. The first one is the history of the military cooperation between Singapore and the U.S. The second is about the reason why Singapore cooperates with the U.S in military affairs. The third one is about the way of the military cooperation and the last one is about its effects.The main content of the first chapter is about the historical background of the military cooperation of Singapore and the U.S by the timeline from 1965 to today. In the second chapter, we will analyze the reason why Singapore seeks to military cooperation with the U.S from the view of Singapore and then we will analyze the reason why the U.S wants to cooperate with Singapore in military affairs from the view of the U.S. The third chapter we will show and analyze many details of military cooperation in five aspects:arms trade, military base, military exercise, anti-terrorism and security cooperation mechanism. The fourth chapter we will analyze and discus what kinds of effects from the military cooperation of Singapore and the U.S will be in Southeast Asia countries and China.The final conclusion of this thesis is that the effects of military cooperation between Singapore and the U.S is a double-edged sword to Singapore’s neighboring countries and China and it will bring some negative effects in China. However, its negative effects to China should not be exaggerated overly. If we research the project that how a small power like Singapore to be positive in the cooperation between small power and great power, it will be very useful to help Chinese policymaker to find a way to reduce the negative effect of the balance diplomacy from Southeast Asia countries.
