As the focus in recent study of the Republic of China, theSino-German military cooperation has taken an important part in China’smodern military history. With the founding of Nanjing NationalGovernment, in order to get rid of the plight of the internal separation anddiplomatic isolation and establish a firm rule, the government wasengaged to promote the armed forces. Germany has always been famousfor a military training and sophisticated weapons, so the Nationalistgovernment tried to hire German military advisers to acquire the Germangovernment’s military and economic assistance and promote thedevelopment and progress of China’s military modernization and defenseindustry. German Weimar government tried to get rid of the shackles ofthe Treaty of Versailles, and the Hitler regime strived to seek militaryexpansion; while, the Chinese market is rich in the natural resources, andis also a sales base of arms and the supply base of strategic raw materials to Germany. Therefore, based on the different needs, China and Germanyhad a decades-long military cooperation. This paper selects the1928-1938as the study time scope, and it explores the militarycooperation between the two countries, agrees such cooperation, improveChina’s military reorganization, training and equipment level, andimprove the standard of construction of China’s defense industry,enriching the ultimate anti-Japanese national readiness. The success andfailure of this historic event has a very rich reference to China’s militarymodernization and national defense strategy adjustment.Paper is divided into five parts, the first part of the preface describesthe value of the topics, research status, research methods, and innovation;The second section presents the historical background of theestablishment of the Sino-German military cooperation; As the main part,the third part narrates the process of Germany military cooperation fromthe establishment to the rupture, and focused on three aspects of theGerman military advisory group, the Sino-German arms trade and thenational defense industry cooperation, to explore the whole picture of the Sino-German military cooperation. Part IV makes a reflection on theSino-German military cooperation, and explores the revelation of thecurrent defense strategy; final epilogue is to make inductivegeneralization and summation of the full text.
