Dalian Urban Environmental Sustainability

With environmental problems appearing in the global scope, the tenet that combining economic development with environment protection and social justice advised by the sustainable development has achieved more and more understandings and approval. The conception of sustainable development gave an end to the wrong viewpoint that economic development opposed to the protection of environment and resources. It also indicated definitely that they should contacted with each other and were each other cause and result. Sustainable development has become the only true choice for existence and development of human beings in the 21 century. The thesis recommends and fully confirms the viewpoint of sustainable development. It points out that the problem of sustainable development of the city is a harmonizing development of pursuing economics, society and ecology. That is sustainable development rooted from environment protection, and sustainable development of the environment is the strategic base of all. On the base of these theoretic analyses, the thesis reviewed the history of city environment development of Dalian. Since the reform and the opening, Dalian has carried out seriously the sustainable development strategy proposed by the Party Central Committee and the State Council. Dalian has made efforts and achievements in the city environment protection with economic developing. Compared with other similar scale cities in the developed countries, Dalian still has wide gaps in environment protection and building. Overall, it analyses the problems in Dalian city environment development. Subsequently, it introduced two foreign cities: Kitakyushu of Japan and Freiburg of Germany and the experience and lessons they have got and the measures they have taken in city sustainable development of environment. Accordingly, it puts forward the measures and experience that can be used for reference in Dalian city sustainable development of environment. According to the city development strategy, city environment protection programming and the aim of city environment development which were advanced in Dalian Urban Master Planning, the thesis puts the emphasis on the concrete measures on Dalian city environment protection and the realization of the sustainable development in the new century.
