This paper bases on the research of CMM, and how to apply it to the Chinese software company. First, it looks back the history of software industry, focusing on the software improvement methods, in which CMM is commonly considered the most effective. Then, as a result of the complexity of this industry, a new concept, Technology Unit (TU) is introduced into the research, just for classifying the software organization into three groups, small technology unit, middle technology unit, and large-middle technology unit, according to their ability to mobilize different source for the use of developing large and complex software. The mutual influence of implementing CMM in the Chinese software company and its need for different resource is also discussed here. The conclusion is that the larger the scale of the TU is, the better of the effect. Two comparations are also made to demonstrate the necessity further. One is the comparation of background of software industry in Chinese, India and USA; the other is the comparation of ISO 9000 and CMM. Based on these conclusions, the necessity of carrying out the CMM in Chinese software company of middle tech'nology unit and above is self-evident. An investigation is also made for this purpose. After this, 10 KPAs are chose to be analyzed in order to find a proper way. Then the obstacle factors of implementing CMM are explored based on the comparation of two software companies. The step is investigating what is the obstacle through questionnaire at first, and then finding what causes these by asking the people face to face. At last, based on the analysis of document, give some advice on helping the software companies to improve their process.
