Ibm Strategic Transformation And Its Enlightenment

During the course of its 90 years' development, IBM has experienced dramatic changes. It has walked through resplendence, dire straits, recovery and success rebuilding. IBM's history is not only the epitome of the entire IT industry, but also a vivid legend of corporate management.IBM's regaining of success is mainly owed to its strategy transformation towards service and software development. From a strategic perspective, this thesis conducts in-depth research and analysis on IBM's strategy transformation and its enlightenment to Chinese enterprises. Firstly, based on the environment stratagem theory, the author explains in great detail the background and the implementation process of IBM's strategy transformation, and furthermore, discusses the important role of strategy management in the establishment of corporate competitive advantage. Secondly, using the value chain theory, the author analyses the adjustment of IBM's value chain policy, and concludes the strategy choice for Chinese enterprises based on the status quo and problems of their value chain management. That is, in the short term, Chinese enterprises should maintain and develop their resource and low cost advantage, and make great efforts in building its manufacturing power instead of remaining "the world's processing center", while on the long run, Chinese enterprises should try to establish their own international brands and competitive capabilities, gradually switching and shifting to both ends of the value chain, i.e. R&D and service. Finally, on the issue of how to improve the strategic management of Chinese enterprises, the author probes into the aspects of the urgency of improvement, the prerequisites, the successful case and the specific measures.
