Private enterprises, as a bright star with the most vitality and life force in our national economy, have become an important power of propping up and pushing our economic increase. Private enterprises being a hot issue of discussion these days is now the focus of attention and at the same time a difficult research topic to deal with. Study of private enterprises in at present the concern of both the government and the business world.This thesis begins with the definition of private enterprises, in retrospect to the developing process of China's private enterprises in brief and the evaluation of their historic functions on the stage of our national economy, from the stage of "economic complement of public owed system" to the role of "the important constituent of socialism market economy". This transition involves main channel, main drive, main force and main pioneer. Specifically speaking, private enterprises are the main channel that can absorb labor forces to take up an occupation, and the main drive to increase our economy and the main force to develop our agriculture and adjust the economic construction, and the main pioneer to reform our national economic system. At the same time, because private enterprises develop gradually in the historic background, that is, from the traditional planned economy to modem market economy, and have been restricted by the low level productivity system. And they have been controlled and guided by the policy factor system, and limited by traditional culture, and influenced by the widespread small agriculture consciousness. So its operations sometimes cannot avoid taking brand at that period. Because of that, private enterprises are sometimes misled when they are confronted with strategic choices. These improper concepts are: the strategy of ideal surpassing, distorted brand-name building, the diversity of power expansion and the framework of family-oriented operations.China's entry into WTO is a bitter-sweet experience to our privateenterprises. The WTO membership has provided them with law-governed channels for their international business and the development of the international market. Their competitive environment inclines to the impartiality. And to compete with those multinationals can help them to grow faster, with their advantage of localization. However, risks and challenges come along with the opportunities. So far as private enterprises are concerned, the real meaning of China's WTO membership is the marking of the beginning of market economy and the end of the operations by way of only boldness, relations and money. For them, now it is much more difficult to do business by copying others' products and trademarks when property right is now in effect. Other challenges are like: The domestic market has been occupied by different competitors. More and more intellectuals are pouring out. And the obstacle of property right which will be the key element when the private enterprises begin to choose their strategies. Taking into consideration the misleading concepts in strategy making, and the influences brought about by China's entry into WTO, we can analyze the development strategy by laying emphasis on the following aspects:First, by defining related market, discriminating all sorts of subdividing market, choosing the first-rank subdivided market, the private enterprises should focus on their advantages, and be skillful in a certain product, and operate special strategy in a certain subdivided market. Second, internationalization strategy: making use of relative advantage, inviting foreign technologies and participating international competition and cooperation. To fulfill this, private enterprises should renovate their ideas by studying some knowledge on WTO. They should try to fulfill the role transition from strategic competition to cooperation. Third, try to promote innovation, and build the nucleus competitive force in an enterprise.
