China and the United States are both important countries in the world, which face each other through the Pacific Ocean. The relation between two countries influences the development and change of the whole world pattern directly. So, both sides are focal points that the other side pays attention to in the international relations, and of both sides the main leader's impression on and appraisal to the other side of country influence policy and measure which one takes to the other directly during a certain period, especially like China that has a tradition ruled by men for more than 2000 years. As a great Marxist and remarkable strategist, Mao Zedong were dealing with all kinds of relations between the Communist Party of China, the People's Republic of China and other countries in the revolutionary career of decades, with his wide field of vision and mighty daring. As the strongest capitalist country in the world, Mao Zedong could not but pay special attention to U.S.A.; Because U.S.A. interfered Chinese affairs frequently during and after World War II, having countless contacts with China, so, it was a focal point in Mao Zedong's diplomatic strategy to deal with the relation with U.S.A..Mao Zedong's understanding and view of U.S.A. were constantly changing. In early days, he had a good impression on U.S.A.; When the diplomatic action of U.S.A. infringed upon Chinese state sovereignty, he criticized it. In wartime of resisting against Japan, Mao Zedong changed the original understanding and tactics to U.S.A. to strive to unite it to resist against Japan in a flexible way in time. He thought most highly of America and had the best opinion to U.S.A.. After the Anti-Japanese War, basically speaking, Mao Zedong held a negative attitude to U.S.A. because of many kinds of factors. Until President Nixon visited China, he did not have some relaxation to the criticism of U.S.A.. Though Mao Zedong's view and tactics to U.S.A. were changing constantly in all his life, the two basic understandings of U.S.A. have not changed all the time. First, U.S.A. was an imperialism country in essence; Second, the American people were different from the U.S. government.Mao Zedong's understanding and appraisal of U.S.A. were so varied and undulating, because influencing factors were in many aspects. The national benefitwas some that Mao Zedong considered first of all while understanding U.S.A.. Whether he criticized U.S.A. or united U.S.A., the purpose was to guarantee the realization and maintenance of China's national benefit. Marxism ideology was another important factor which restricted his opinions of U.S.A.. From this, Mao Zedong often had the criticizing, critical and hostile attitude to the U.S. government and social system, etc.; But ideology makes way for national benefit finally. The Soviet Union was another important factor which influenced Mao Zedong's view of U.S.A.. From the founding of the Communist Party of China to the Sino-Soviet relation's breaking, Mao Zedong's understanding and tactics to U.S.A. were in accordance with the Soviet Union basically. From the end of the sixties to the beginning of the seventies, it was just the Soviet Union's threat to China's security that impelled Mao Zedong to change the view of U.S.A. objectively. In addition, Mao Zedong's personal experience of life and individual character were influencing and restricting his understanding and appraisal to U.S.A. in different degrees. Because of lacking of experience of foreign life, he could not have a thorough understanding of U.S.A. in some aspects; The unbending personality formed since childhood made him not yield to the pressure of U.S.A..Mao Zedong's opinions of U.S.A. offered strategic guidance to the Party and the country's policy to U.S.A. at that time. His opinion of studying from western countries, such as U.S.A., has established a thought foundation for the opening-up policy in China. However, because Mao Zedong understood U.S.A. incompletely, he had some biases to U.S.A.. For example, he thought that the democracy and freedo...
