Enterprise resource planning (ERP) is the next generation to manufacturing resource planning (MRPII). ERP expands the scope of information integration to the upstream and downstream of enterprises through breaking up the boundary, manages the whole supply chain, realizes the making of supply chain in order to design, manage, control and optimize the whole supply chain and meet goals of collaborative competition, synchronize engineering and collaborative business.With China's entry into WTO, domestic enterprises see information system as a key way to enhance competitiveness so as to meet the challenge and be commensurate with international practice. As a practical and fast problem-solving method, ERP has become a recipe for them to ease the concern over WTO. The successful implementation of ERP may help enterprises do decision-making on a scientific basis, and promote efficiency and effectiveness of the administration. ERP may also serve as framework and platform for IT construction on the basis of hardware network. The process of ERP implementation is also one of organizational learning experience, which enhances the administrative level of organizations. However, in the current environment of eagerness and uneasiness, whether an enterprise can make the right decision and choice in a cool and reasonable manner often affect to a large degree the success or failure of information system construction. After all, implementation of ERP has high risk, low chance of success. How to implement ERP successfully has been a problem for enterprises that takes ERP.For most of domestic enterprises, decision-making, selection, design, implementation, operation, maintenance and improvement of ERP should be a sound and necessary process. It is meaningful to handle each step in the life cycle of ERP. Through recalling the development of ERP in China, analyzing various problems existed in the implementation, and being coupled with ERP principle, management thinking and implementation method, the paper studies and discusses feasibility of implementing ERP in China, critical success factors and right ways of implementation etc. The focus is on analysis of problems and related suggestions. The paper has five sections, namely, 'definition and history of ERP', 'feasibility of ERP implementation in China', 'common ERP problems for Chinese enterprises', 'factors affecting ERP implementation', and 'probe into ERP to be taken by Chinese enterprises'.
