Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) have been one of the most important forces in economic development. They play a positive role in promoting economic growth, prospering the market, expanding employment and taking the precautions against financial risks, etc. However, the developing state of the SMEs is not very promising, and the phenomenon of the high close rate of these enterprises exists throughout the world, and so does that in our country. The author puts forward the problem, and decides to analyze the factors that restrict the growth and sustainable development ability of these enterprises in use of the company competitiveness theory of the strategy management category.The concrete research work and methods adopted are: choosing the representative small and medium sized assembly manufacturing enterprises as research object and analyzing such enterprises' characteristics; using the company competitiveness theory, combined with the enterprises' characteristics, to analyze their competitiveness composition elements; according to the analysis conclusion, designing the competitiveness evaluation index system of the object enterprises, as well as a questionnaire for revising the index system; using a compositive method of Specialist Grading and Entropy to confirm the index weights, and Euclidian Distance Discriminant to make competitiveness ordering of evaluating objects; analyzing the object enterprise competitiveness elements according to the evaluation result so as to adopt the corresponding competitive strategies; in the end, selecting 5 representative sample companies to do demonstration in validating the evaluation method.The research conclusion indicates that to conquer the Growth Ceiling, a SME has to make great efforts to improve its core competitiveness and to optimize the distribution of its limited resources, except for paying attention to the short-term economic benefits. A company has to periodically evaluate its competitiveness with proper evaluation method, so that it can soberly understand its competitive competence and competitive position and adjust its competitive strategies timely.
