The Influence Of State Nationalism On Russian Foreign Policy

After the cold war, Russia undergoes a tortuous way in its diplomacy which exercises four policies: "pro-western", "two-head Eagle", "multi-dimensional" and "Realistic Policy" since Putin's administration. Actually, for more than a decade, Russia has been strategically adjusting its diplomacy from time to time. The causes for the adjustment are not only related to the influences of political structure and economic position, but also closely associated with the influence of the cultural factor which also plays an important role in diplomacy. As one of the major components of the cultural factor, CRSN (Contemporary Russian State Nationalism) hides itself in the decision-makers' sense of value and their ways of thought. With strong cohesion and inherent value system, CRSN also affects the decision-makers' judgment involving the international relations and further affects their strategic decisions. Focusing on the point of nationalism, this paper introduces the research situation related to CRSN and also explores how and why CRSN influences Russia's diplomacy. The latter part of the paper gives a value analysis on the mentioned influence.The paper consists of three parts: introduction, body and conclusion.Introduction, combs the domestic and foreign research situation related to the fact that CRSN influences its diplomacy. In addition, it manifests the theoretical and realistic significance of the topic choice;offers the research method and finally, points out the writer's creative findings, such as the definition about CRSN and the unique research method as well.Body can be subdivided into the following four sections:Section Ⅰ: It creatively defines the term CRSN after consulting many scholars' research, and presents the characteristics of CRSN. It also introduces the term 'carrier', attaching to three parties of CRSN: "Unifying Russia" Party, Russian Federal Communist Party and Russian Free-democratic Party. At the same time, the parties' situation and their opinions are shown.Section Ⅱ: Also the focus in part two, it analyzes the influences caused by CRSN upon Russia's diplomatic strategy and policy. It is CRSN that urges Russia, as a big power, to pursue its independent diplomatic strategy and policy. It is CRSN that promotes the formation of multi-dimensional diplomatic strategy and policy. It is just CRSN that influences the regional diplomatic strategy and policy. It is also CRSN that influences the secure diplomatic strategy and policy.SectionⅢ: It presents three causes for the diplomatic influence originating from CRSN. Firstly, Russia's traditional thought enables CRSN to influence Russia's diplomacy. Secondly, Russia's diplomatic trend promotes CRSN's influence upon itsdiplomatic strategy and policy through the contemporary Slavism, New Eurasianism and "Russian New Thought". Respectively, the contemporary Slavism helps CRSN influence the diplomatic strategy and policy in CIS, Europe, Middle East and East Asia. The New Eurasianism urges CRSN to influence Russia's multi-dimensional strategy and policy in diplomacy. The "Russian New Thought" promotes CRSN to influence the nation's security diplomacy—including its military diplomacy, energy diplomacy, and anti-terrorism diplomacy. Finally, CRSN is emphasized in its diplomacy because of the direct pressure from the west.SectionlV: It gives the value analysis on CRSN's influence upon its diplomacy. Focusing on the fact that CRSN is closely associated with the political parties, and from the angle of independence, unity, state protection and antiforeigning, this section describes the positive effects as well as the negative ones when CRSN influences Russia's diplomacy. Thanks to CRSN, the positive effects are: it maintains the nation's self—respect and independence;strengthens the nation's unity;heightens its international position and improves the development of multi-polarity. Also owing to CRSN, the negative effects are produced. The western countries heighten their vigilance against Russia;the developmental relationship between Russia and the Middle East Europe is influenced. Possibly, it enables CIS to break up.Conclusion analyzes the trend that CRSN influences Russia's diplomacy. On the other hand, it manifests the strategic meaning favoring China when the study involving CRSN's influences upon Russia's diplomacy is conducted.
