| The thesis focuses on the theory as well as historical and contemporary practice of coexistence while analyzing the foreign policy of China in terms of the strategy it takes. In the first chapter, the author discusses about different thoughts for peaceful co-existence and tries to find out different points between Chinese and Western scholars and politicians. It is clarified that westerns always believe coexistence must be built upon Balance of Power while the Chinese take coexistence as the inherent requirement by the nature and human society. By pointing out the defects in several classic western theories of international relations and models of coexistence, the author argues that western view on coexistence can not crack the nut in the real world. To a large extend, China's philosophy for coexistence is more universally acceptable to people from all over the world for it is based on mutual understanding and trust. The details of the second chapter are mainly concerned with the historical tradition and motivation of China's long-held foreign strategy of peaceful coexistence. The author first defines the strategy of peaceful coexistence as the basic principle for Chinese foreign policy. By analyzing the relative statistics of China's GDP, population and territory in history, the author argues that Chinese foreign strategy has long been characterized by peace and harmony while the western countries adopted aggressive and colonial strategy once they developed into great powers. In the last part of this chapter, the author concludes that China has long held the coexistence strategy thanks to its traditional culture it has long persisted in.The last chapter specializes in case studies, in which the author selected nations such as Burma, India, the United States, East Asia countries, Russia and Mid Asia countries, which belong to different ethnics, civilization and political systems as the typical example for inspecting the practice of China's contemporary peaceful coexistence strategy exemplified by Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and its new form of New Security Concept. In conclusion, the author argues that in the colourful and diversified world, China's coexistence strategy is of great value and feasibility, which not only conforms to the common interests of Chinese people and people from other countries, but also is primary and conducive to the building of a harmonious world. |
