After the reform and opening up,China' s rapid rise attracted the eyes of the world.With the sharp rise of "China-threat theory",domestic scholars started to research how to build image of our country.Some of these studies have defined the concept of National Image,some others have discussed the relationship between external communication and national image,and some of them use the theory of "soft power" to explain the essentiality of national image……Many scholars also analysed in detail how the media of other countries to build the image of China,especially the U.S.media.Some of them research through cases,such as how the U.S. media choose the words to report and their writing style.They analysed the background and reasons for why the image of China has been "demonized". In general,existing studies have emphasized the important role of national image,also put forward some positive proposal for China to set up good national image,particularly how to strengthen and improve external propaganda to shape the country's international image.After China' s rising of international status,to construct a good image for the country become more and more important.It will consolidate and promote the development of the country.International Communications play an important role to construct the image of the country(especially the country's international image),through which,a country's image enter into the international community.This paper introduces the relevant theories of the national image and international communications in briefly.Also analyses the role of the international communications in building a country's image,especially the role of the media.Based on these studies,this paper explains the western mainstream media(use the "New York Times," "The Times","Le Figaro" as the study objects) how to shape the image of china,when the Beijing Olympic torch relayed overseas.And try to summarize the reasons of why the mainstream media always give negative reports and construct distorted image of China. Finally the paper hopes to find some ways to strengthen and improve China's international communications,so as to improve the national image,in favor to win useful international environment of our own development.
