Paulo Freire(1921-1997),the famous Brazilian educator, reputed as one of the most influential educators in the second half of the 20th century, is also a typical representative of"The Oppressed Pedagogy"trend of thought. He experienced by himself the poorness and pungency of the oppressed, and deeply discerned that the oppression not only alienated man and distorted human nature, but hindered and restrained the perfecting procedure of humanity as well. His thought of education not only has affected the development of the educational theory and practice in the third world countries, but also exerted tremendous influence on the developed countries including the United States. Meanwhile, he also dedicated to practice and exploration, proposed to develop critical awareness of educational theory for the purpose of liberation. His practical exploration provides a solid foundation for its rich educational theory. For this reason,"he has become legendary in his era."Aiming at the domesticating education, which was used by the oppressors to train the oppressed to adapt the reality, Freire put forward his famous ideology of liberating education. This ideology not only provides enlightenment for the oppressed in the subordinate positions in the world, but also supplies us a firmly theoretical means to criticize and reflect the educational theory and practice nowadays in China. He believes that education's democracy and independence can exist only with political democracy and independence, thus a country must solve the problem of political independence and liberation first. Freire's outstanding contribution is made to develop critical awareness of educational theory for the purpose of liberation, forming its own unique educational system. This aspect of education and teaching reform has far-reaching significance as well as a strong social and political significance.
