As the core component of Chinese textbooks, the selected texts embody the national will, our national culture and the mainstream social values. Moreover, they also reflect people's expectations and demands of Chinese education. In the whole Chinese education system, primary schools function as an important foundation. As the executor and implementer of Chinese textbooks, Chinese teachers'approval degree of selected texts to some extent influences their understanding and grasp of textbooks, their implementation of new curriculum criterion spirits and the Chinese teaching quality.This paper reviews domestic studies on selected texts in Chinese textbooks and defines the concept of approval degree. Research methods include questionnaire surveys and individual interviews. The author selects as respondents Chinese teachers from four primary schools in Jinan, Shandong Province. The conclusions are as follows: selected texts of high approval degree can be of various types; selected texts of low approval degree can only be narrations or expositions; if teachers assess selected texts from students'perspective, the approval degree can be affected to a certain degree by notes; teachers'interpretations of some texts may be in sharp contrast with textbook editors'intentions. The above-mentioned conclusions illustrate that there is still room for teachers to improve their knowledge structure and their text reading ability.Through analyzing the conclusions of surveys and interviews, the author summarizes the factors that affect the approval degree of selected materials. Those factors fall into two categories: internal factors, namely teachers'education experience and teaching experience, their knowledge structure and their initiative to participate in text interpretation; external factors, namely influences from both the social environment and students.On the basis of those factors, the author proposes some strategic suggestions on how to improve the approval degree of selected texts.On the one hand, three ways have been proposed to improve the quality of textbooks: scrutinize selected materials, supplement notes and provide more references. On the other hand, suggestions have been made for primary school Chinese teachers to improve themselves. They have to be voluntary learners and active text interpreters, who will do researches vigorously, keep reflecting on teaching, and make the most of abundant teaching resources.
