What is the function of grammar in English teaching? How can we teach English grammar well? What principles should we follow? What methods should we employ? These questions have been puzzling many high school English teachers, including me.Firstly, this thesis overviews the status quo of studies on task-based language teaching at home and abroad. Secondly, the thesis briefly introduces the task-based language teaching, including its definition, its theoretical basis, its features, and the principles for designing tasks, how to carry them out and how to evaluate the students. Thirdly, the writer conducts an experiment to prove the feasibility and advantages of the task- based language teaching. Applying task- based language teaching approach to grammar teaching can arouse the students'interest in learning grammar; can fully mobilize the subjective initiative of the students; can correct the students'attitude towards study, can enhance their self- consciousness and teamwork mentality; can help the students gain confidence in learning English grammar well. Proper application of task-based language teaching to English grammar teaching has changed the boring class into a vigorous one. Fourthly, the author makes reflections on how to apply this teaching approach to grammar teaching in high school. Of course, there are many difficulties in carrying it out. The causes are analyzed and made clear. Finally, the author offers some suggestions to high school English teachers. This research is believed to be of theoretical significance and practical value. It is sincerely hoped that this study will enlighten high school English teachers and help them improve English grammar teaching.
