China is a land of poetry. Poetry has a profound history in China. As the mainstream form of Chinese literature and the spiritual home of the Chinese people, poetry, since the ancient times, has penetrated to the deepest roots of our everyday life. Poetic education, as its name indicates, is to educate in the form of poetry. Poetic education is the cherished tradition of Chinese education history, which always attracts considerable attention of the Chinese people. With the changes in social and cultural environment, poetry is on the decline, especially the new-style poetry and the modern poetry. With the advent of the new century, the commercial society with the ever-sharpening competition has turned humans into materials, changed spirit into goods. Poetry becomes more and more fragile with the passing of time."Poetic education", is defeated by earthliness. Confronted by the exam system, education pays more and more attention to its utility. With the idea of "Points speak everything", the education of Chinese language and literature turns into an exercise-stuffed teaching. With the pursuit of the literature education and the cultivation of humanistic spirit,"Poetic education" is brought on the agenda once again. Poetic education is a good way to establish a harmonious teacher-student relationship and to carry out humanistic care. And the new curriculum standard for Chinese requires that students "should be able to appreciate literary works, have their own affective experience, preliminarily savor the content of the work and extract ideas of nature, society and human beings", so as to enhance students’aesthetic responsiveness and cultural functions.To actualize this idea, this paper reviews the history and functions of "Poetic education", explores the cause of its decline and re-development, so as to probe the depletion of humanistic spirit as a consequence of the decline of "poetic education". Then, combined with the unique characteristics of poetry, this paper analyzes the multiple functions of "Poetic education" in terms of effective moral education, spiritual cultivation, aesthetic guidance, refinement of language. On this basis and in accordance with the requirement of Chinese education, the paper surveys the problems of poetry education and puts forward the principle of "poetic education" in the middle school, i.e., to increase language sense through recitation, to broaden view through reading, to grasp main idea through close reading, to re-construct scenery through sketch, to extract essence by utilizing the learned knowledge. Through a series of methods, the enthusiasm and initiative for poetry learning is developed, the perception for poetic beauty is enhanced, and the humanistic spirit and aesthetic attainment is cultivated. The aim of this paper is to promote the cherished tradition of "poetic education", so as to lead the education of Chinese language and literature into a land of scenic beauty and poetic life.
